Dear John,
I've kept out of your way because I know that you have been much in demand. But I have spoken to many of your friends and former students at length about what you mean to them -- everyone in Oxford is thinking of you -- and it is wonderful how consistent (not only in magnitude, but in specific content) is their love and admiration. I am likewise deeply admiring, and deeply saddened by this ridiculous and awful reality. I hope it's alright to add that I've also seen some of Jenny's emails to your friends, and have been astonished by their grace, wit and power. What a pair you are.
