Dear John,
I just wanted to say I'm very much thinking of you and your family. I was so terribly sad to learn that things have taken this turn for the worse: that really is rotten luck. Although our paths haven't crossed at All Souls as much as I'd have liked, I've always greatly enjoyed your warmth, humour, and humanity. I do hope that you're comfortable as you spend this precious time with your family.
