John Gardner at Home

Memories from Ben Eidelson

Dear John,

I was so very sorry to learn of your declining health. I just wanted to convey that I’m thinking of you at this time, and also to reiterate my thanks for the critical role you played in my own intellectual development. I’m finally returning to academia after a few years in practice — I’m starting as an assistant professor at Harvard in the fall — and, as I think about how to approach that new role, I’m all the more grateful for the example you set, not only of rigor and creativity but of engaged and supportive mentorship as well.

No need to reply, of course. I wish you and your loved ones peace and strength, and I hope you know how many you have inspired through your work over the years.

Fondly,

Ben Eidelson
