John Gardner at Home

Memories from Karam Chadha

Dear John,

I'm so sorry to hear about your battle with cancer. (Matt Kramer forwarded me the recent email from your wife, Jenny.)

Though we've only met few times, I wanted to write to say, first, that I have been profoundly influenced by your work. I'm currently working on a response to your thought-provoking paper, "The Opposite of Rape". As someone writing a PhD thesis on consent, your paper has forced me to think more critically about the centrality of consent in contemporary discussions of sexual morality.

I wanted to say, second, how much I enjoyed your company at dinner following your talk at the Cambridge Moral Sciences Club when I was Secretary last year. Our conversation included your partial diagnosis for the popularity of Law & Economics in the United States, our surprise and alarm at how various legal systems had effectively allowed certain companies to set up their own courts and legal regulatory systems, and - rather more personally - what our fathers thought of each of us pursuing philosophy.

With admiration,

Karam
