Dear John,
I was disappointed when I heard a few weeks ago that you would not be able to come to ALPC this year. It had been too long. But then today I heard the more serious news.
I have wonderful memories of when I first met you, of that brilliant, brassy, but ever friendly young All Souls scholar. As you know, I have always been a big fan of your work, and you in general, and my thoughts and good wishes are with you and your family going forward.
