John Gardner at Home

Memories from Eduardo Peñalver

Dear Jennifer,

I am writing to express my deepest condolences for the loss of John. Although he was only here at Cornell Law School briefly, he made a tremendous impression on our community and maintained close friendships with many Cornell colleagues in the time since his 2015 visit here.

Whether it was walking through the gorges or making dinner with other visiting faculty or just hanging out in the faculty lounge at lunchtime, John threw himself into the Cornell Law School community during his short visit. He fit in here better than almost any visitor I can remember. And by the time he left, it felt like he had been here much longer than half a term. Before he returned to England, he and I spoke about the possibility of a return visit at some point in the future, and it was something I was very much looking forward to pursuing. I am so sorry that we will not have the opportunity.

During this very sad time, I hope you take comfort in knowing that you and your family have a group of colleagues here in upstate New York who are thinking of you and sharing in your sadness.

Warm wishes,

Eduardo M. Peñalver
