Dear John,
We shared the special (and for many of us unexpected) journey that is being a prize fellow at All Souls and I have been constantly impressed by your many achievements and the spirit in which you have accomplished them. Using it to such full effect makes a significant contribution to justifying an otherwise quaint institution. As well as being a stellar academic, you were a source of energy for everyone around you. Your loss is keenly felt and you and your family are in my thoughts.
